Acorn Bombardment

Acorns from our live oaks are falling like crazy now.  Just sitting still on the porch and listening provides a serenade of thumps as they hit the ground all around.  I'm not sure why they are so much heavier this year than in the past; I have heard that oaks drop extra acorns when they are about to die.  I'm not buying into that explanation since they are all healthy looking and have not been too drought-stressed for several years.  If I were a squirrel I'd be totally overwelmed right now...

Copperhead-less

This is the first copperhead snake I've ever seen near our Wimberley house, and only the 2nd venomous snake.  I saw it on the road a few hundred yards from our place during my morning run.  It looks like a car ran precisely over it's head- good aim!

Bird Brain-less

Mother Nature allows very little to go to waste in Wimberley.  I saw a dead bird on the ground outside one of our large living room windows; evidently it tried to fly through the glass.  The next time I looked this was all that was left.  Fire ants picked it completely clean of everything but bone and feathers.  We all hate fire ants, but I have to admit that they are pretty amazing little creatures.
